Roland Layland – born 19th September 1948 - has lived in North Wales since 1969. He became a member of Llanberis Mountain Rescue team soon after its formation and has been a member of the committee since 1973. He is currently the Training Officer.
He is an active member of the team, acting both as a first aider and base co-ordinator.
He also joined SARDA Wales early in its formation, inheriting his first dog from a departing handler. He has gone on have at least 9 dogs accepted for training, 5 of which have become full working search dogs.
He has been a member of the SARDA committee since 1979, with stints as Secretary, two periods being Training officer, Chairman (1987-1993), Call out co-ordinator and committee member. He is currently co-opted annually as call out co-ordinator.
He has represented both Llanberis and SARDA at NSARDA, NWMRA, the MRC, and North Wales Search Managers forums. He is currently the NWMRA Training officer and Chair of North Wales Search Managers.
He has been active in encouraging the development of Search management and search management skills, both attending and instructing on the MRC search field skills courses, Search managers courses and the MRC Party Leaders courses.
He has developed his first aid skills to the highest level and has taught first aid since the 1980’s, when he became an Ieuan Jones Bangor first Aid scheme instructor. Instructors on this scheme provided training to Mountain Rescue teams for free and he has trained both local and national teams in first aid on this basis.
He is currently an ECMR Advanced first aider and instructs on the intermediate and advanced courses run for MR teams on an annual basis. |
